SILVERDALE — The Port Anbgeles girls basketball team outscored the Olympic Trojans 10-7 in the second overtime to finally end an Olympic League thriller Thursday night by the score of 55-52.
These two teams match up well as the Riders (9-3, 10-5) beat the Trojans (7-5, 9-7) by a couple of points when they first played at Port Angeles earlier in the year.
“This was a big win for us because it puts us a step up in the battle for [playoff] seeding,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.
Krista Johnson sparked the Riders with 16 points while Kiah Jones added nine.
The Riders were behind 40-37 with 7 seconds left in regulation when Maddy Hinrichs, the point guard, hit Johnson with a pass on the perimeter and Johnson sank a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.
At the end of the first overtime with the Riders behind 45-44, Johnson attacked the basket, was fouled, and made one of two free throws to send the game into the second overtime.
“It was a team effort in the second overtime,” Poindexter said.
“Kiah Jones made five of her nine points in the second overtime, Maddy hit a big 3 and Krista made a couple of free throws.”
Everyone who played for the Riders scored. “We absolutely needed every bucket,” Poindexter said.
