Some $20,000 worth of copper cable stolen

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the theft of about 2,000 feet of power line cable.

The copper cable, valued at about $20,000, was removed from de-electrified power poles between Laird and Reddick roads west of Port Angeles early last week, Chief Criminal Deputy Brian King said.

Investigators believe the theft occurred at night because witnesses reported seeing trespassers frequenting the area after dusk, King said.

The wire was owned by McKinley Paper Co., which purchased the former Nippon Paper Industries USA mill on Ediz Hook last year.

About 100 feet of copper wire was left on the ground.

“The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying those persons responsible for the theft,” King said.

“If you have any information regarding the investigation please call the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office at 360-417-2459.”
