Small fire reported northwest of Shelton

OLYMPIC NATIONAL FOREST — A small fire was reported in steep terrain northwest of Shelton in the Skokomish watershed last week.

The blaze, called the Steel Bridge Fire, was reported as being about a half-acre in size at about 3 a.m. Friday.

No information about the blaze was available from Olympic National Forest on Saturday.

The cause of the fire, which was in Olympic National Forest’s Hood Canal Ranger District near the high steel bridge just off Forest Service Road 2340, was under investigation while crews worked to determine how to suppress the blaze.

“It’s in very steep terrain,” said Donna Nemeth, Olympic National Forest spokeswoman, on Friday.

The fire was in a canyon with a slope of about 90 percent, she said.

Crews from Olympic National Forest and the state Department of Natural Resources, as well as a crew from the Mount Baker Squamish National Forest, were at the fire Friday, Nemeth said.

No road or area closures were in effect, though use of alternative routes was advised.

For details about alternative travel routes or recreation sites, phone the Hood Canal Ranger District at 360-765-2200.
