PORT ANGELES — A landslide early Sunday afternoon blocked the Olympic Discovery Trail between Morse Creek and the site of the former Rayonier pulp mill.
Port Angeles police said the slide brought down two trees and sent earth 8 feet deep and 30 to 40 feet wide across the route about two miles east of the mill site.
Early reports that a hiker had been caught in the slide turned out to be unfounded, although a group of bicyclists had just cleared the area when the slide occurred, police said.
Police did not know when the slide might be cleared by the city Parks and Recreation Department.
The paved trail leads from Ediz Hook on the west eastward nearly to Sequim.
When all segments are completed, the hiking, biking and equestrian route will link LaPush with Port Townsend, much of it along abandoned railroad right of way.
