Jefferson County may have to develop an extensive program to monitor saltwater intrusion into water wells as a result of a ruling issued by the Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board last month.
The county has been ordered to properly classify and develop protection standards for critical aquifer recharge areas, among other measures, within the next 180 days as a result of a complaint filed by a Shine water group and the Olympic Environmental Council.
Members of the Shine Community Action Council, who were among around 25 people at a meeting held by Jefferson County commissioners Monday, said they had fought for the past several years to protect their East Jefferson County wells near the shoreline against saltwater seepage.
