Shelters in Port Angeles, Port Townsend offer refuge, warmth in winter weather

People in need of shelter from this week’s snowstorms can find it in Port Angeles and Port Townsend.

In Port Townsend, a winter shelter is operated in the basement of the American Legion Hall at 209 Monroe St. through a partnership among the Community Outreach Association Shelter Team, several local churches, Olympic Community Action Programs and the Marvin G. Shields Memorial American Legion Post 26.

The shelter is being kept open 24 hours a day during this week’s storms, said Ginger Bischel of OlyCAP.

It is typically open daily from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. through mid-March.

In Port Angeles, Serenity House of Clallam County offers a street outreach center at 520 E. First Street, where people will find blankets, sleeping mats and a bathroom.

Serenity House Executive Director Kathy Wahto said the center is open this week from 8 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. each day.

Serenity House also has a hygiene center at 516 E. First St. The hygiene center opens when the outreach center closes.

When daytime temperatures drop below freezing, Serenity House often opens a warming station at the hygiene center. The warming station was not open as of Tuesday afternoon.

For more information or to volunteer or donate to the warming station in Port Angeles, phone Serenity House Deputy Director Shirley Anderson 360-452-7224.

For more information about the Port Townsend shelter, phone OlyCAP at 360-385-2571.
