It was a bad morning to be out on the roads.
Icy highways early Friday morning contributed to 58 reports of vehicle rollovers, spin-outs or fender benders in the seven-county district that includes Clallam and Jefferson counties, said the State Patrol.
All the injuries from the wrecks were minor, said Trooper Krista Hedstrom, State Patrol spokeswoman.
“There were no serious injuries or blocked highways” from vehicles skidding on black ice, she said.
For that reason, no State Patrol memos were sent out pinpointing individual wrecks.
At least six were on the North Olympic Peninsula.
The Sequim Fire Department responded to four rollover wrecks due to black ice between 5 a.m. and about 8 a.m. when temperatures rose above freezing, said Patrick Young, spokesman for the department.
He said all were on roads east of 7 Cedars Casino to the Clallam County line, including on U.S. Highway 101.
None of those in the wrecks needed transport to a hospital, Young said.
Jefferson County emergency dispatchers said they had reports of two minor ice-caused wrecks on state highways.
Clallam County dispatchers said no serious injuries were reported and referred inquires to the State Patrol.
The state Department of Transportation has sanded roadways since, Hedstrom said late Friday afternoon.
“When we respond to several ice-related collisions, we request that DOT come out and take care of the roads,” Hedstrom said.
“We should be looking better [Saturday] morning.”
