Services Friday, Saturday for girl killed when car went into river

PORT ANGELES – When selecting flowers to honor Vanna K. Francis at her funeral, her aunt, Elizabeth Dawson, picked wildflowers.

“She was sweet and refreshing, like a wildflower,” she said.

“This is a real loss to the whole community.”

Francis, 17, was one of two teenagers who died when a car carrying seven teenagers crashed into the Elwha River early Sunday morning.

The driver of the car, Sela Kalama, 19, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

A candlelight prayer service will be held in her honor at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribal Center, 2851 Lower Elwha Road.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at the center.

Burial will be at the Lower Elwha Klallam Place Road Cemetery.

A potluck reception at the tribal center will follow the funeral services.

Ronnie Scroggins, 15, the other teen who died in the crash, was a freshman at Neah Bay High School.

His funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Neah Bay School Gym, 3560 Deer St.

A memorial fund for Scroggins, the Ronnie Scroggins Memorial Fund, has been set up at the Bank of America, at 102 E. Front St. or 134 W. Eighth St., in Port Angeles.
