SEQUIM — It’s only a spot on a country road, usually deserted except for the occasional passing car or pedestrian.
But Thursday, this lonely spot on the side of Palo Alto Road was busy — young people came to visit the place where three of their friends died and three others were injured in a New Year’s Eve crash.
Their eyes reddened by sorrow, the visitors, mostly in their late teens and early 20s, wandered through wet grass and scrubby shrubs pausing to look at the ground, examining pieces of debris.
One girl found a sticker reading “trouble” in the weeds. She threw it down angrily, her actions accompanied by an expletive.
Another young woman added it to the collection of items she was gathering.
Often they huddled in groups of two or three in the cold sunshine.
When one cried, another was quickly there to share a comforting hug.
What they wanted were answers.
