SEQUIM — Clallam County commissioners may create a no-shoot zone around the SunLand golf course community north of Sequim after property owners petitioned for it.
Signatures from owners of 446 SunLand-area parcels were presented to the county commissioners, who on Tuesday are scheduled to set a 10:30 a.m. Oct. 26 public hearing on the matter.
County Administrator Dan Engelbertson has proposed several other significant changes in the county’s 1997 firearms discharge restrictions ordinance that will also go before county residents at the public hearing.
“This may have been a rural hunting community years ago, but the population has increased so that it really is a dangerous situation,” said Sharon Pia, who with 10 other volunteers gathered signatures from SunLand residents over the past year to stop hunters from shooting at elk roaming near SunLand.
“It’s just ridiculous that we have shooting in this area, even on 10-acre parcels,” Pia said.
