Sequim scooter ordinance has no minimum age for riders

SEQUIM — An ordinance regulating motorized foot scooters — but not the age of their riders — passed the City Council on a 5-1 vote Wednesday morning.

City Councilman Paul McHugh voted against the ordinance because of safety concerns surrounding the lack of an age requirement.

The council reviewed the ordinance at its Nov. 8 meeting and asked city staff to remove the requirement that riders be a minimum of 16 years old.

The ordinance requires riders to wear a helmet, and allows riding only between 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset.

The scooters will be prohibited on streets with a speed limit greater than 25 mph and on city property, including parks, trails and sidewalks.

The ordinance also prohibits passengers and using the scooters for towing.

Scooter riders must obey all rules of the road. The fine for violating the ordinance is $50, reduced to $25 if paid within 24 hours.
