Sequim schools superintendent takes East Wenatchee post

SEQUIM – Schools Superintendent Garn Christensen accepted the position of superintendent of East Wenatchee’s Eastmont School District on Wednesday night, telling his staff and Sequim School Board members about his decision Thursday.

Christensen is the second Clallam County schools superintendent to resign this year and to depart near the end of the school year.

Christensen will finish this, his fourth year as superintendent in Sequim, and start in East Wenatchee on July 1.

“It’s an area I’ve always found has some challenges that are interesting – it’s in growth mode,” Christensen told the Peninsula Daily News on Thursday evening.

“It will be good to be on the other side of growing enrollment.”

Eastmont has about 5,200 students on 10 campuses, compared with Sequim’s 3,000 students and five schools.

Enrollment in the Sequim School District has fluctuated, said Christensen.

The most recent projections show that while the population of Sequim is increasing, school enrollment is down, he said.

“It’s a greater challenge for younger families to live here,” Christensen said.
