SEQUIM: School officials to meet Monday to discuss looming cuts

SEQUIM — A new vote count has reinforced the apparent second failure of the Sequim School District’s proposed three-year, 8.2 million maintenance and operations levy.

At the end of counting Friday, the levy was 389 votes short of the 60 percent threshold required by state law for passage.

On Tuesday, the levy was 357 votes short.

With the apparent defeat of the levy, school district officials are analyzing expenses to see where cuts can be made, Superintendent Mike Joyner says.

“A plan won’t be available until Monday,” Joyner said.

That’s when the Sequim School Board will meet to discuss possible budget cuts at 7 p.m. in the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

The outcome is unlikely to change even if more mail-in ballots postmarked by April 24 arrive, Clallam County Auditor Kathleen McKeown said.
