SEQUIM — Heather Jeffers will fill the unexpired term of the Sequim School Board seat vacated by Sarah Bedinger’s June 17 resignation.
The School Board selected Jeffers, 42, administrator of Avamere Olympic Rehabilitation of Sequim, on a 3-1 vote Monday night.
Board member Walt Johnson cast the dissenting vote. He did not say why.
Jeffers was immediately sworn in.
Other applicants were Steven Humphrey, an artist and IT consultant, and Jeff Killian, a retired telecommunications worker.
“I was honored to know that three people wanted to serve on this board. They were all good candidates,” said board member Bev Horan.
Other board members also commented on the high quality of the applicants.
“We can’t go wrong tonight,” said School Board member Mike Howe.
The written roll-call vote asked board members as to whether they agreed to select Jeffers. It was the first vote taken, and there were no similar votes on Humphrey or Killian.
The School Board term will expire at the end of 2015. Jeffers said she did not know whether she will run for election to the position then.
She has lived in Sequim for 10 years and has a daughter in fourth grade at Greywolf Elementary School.
During earlier interviews with the School Board, Jeffers said her primary concern is addressing a lack of practical life skills in graduates of the Sequim school system.
She was an unsuccessful candidate for the Olympic Medical Center board in 2013, losing to incumbent Jean Hordyk.
