SEQUIM — Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center commissioners Tuesday night reluctantly raised rates by 25 percent effective Jan. 1.
“We couldn’t do anything else,” Commissioner Melinda Griffith said.
The price increase didn’t come as a surprise.
Commissioners have been discussing rate hikes since the first attempt to pass a maintenance and operations levy failed Sept. 17.
A second levy, with a lowered rate, was also soundly defeated by voters during the Nov. 5 general election.
In the most recent vote, the proposal seeking 10 cents on every $1,000 of assessed valuation — $10 annually on property valued at $100,000 — received less than 50 percent “yes” vote.
Under state law, passage requires a 60 percent “yes” vote.
