SEQUIM — The “invisible police department,” as Sequim Police Chief Robert Spinks calls his department, could become a police station within the alternative school.
Superintendent Garn Christensen broached the subject for the first time at Monday’s Sequim School District board meeting — moving the Police Department from the back corner of a strip mall at 609 W. Washington St. to the east wing of the Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St.
Christensen and Spinks walked through the space recently and saw potential.
The 11,000-square-foot wing, which comprises about a quarter of the Community School building, would be twice the size of the Police Department’s current space.
“There’s no way we can continue to live in 5,300 square feet,” Spinks said of that location, where the department just reached the end of a 10-year lease.
The police station, where 50 employees now work, is being remodeled this week.
“But that’s just a Band-Aid,” Spinks said, adding that it’ll buy a year, maybe.
