The recent distribution of a neo-Nazi newsletter in Sequim is part of a trend that has been seen throughout the Pacific Northwest since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Officials at the northwest regional office of the Anti-Defamation League said Thursday that the number of reports of hate mail being distributed by neo-Nazis and other extremist groups has nearly tripled since the attacks.
“Many of these groups have stepped up since Sept. 11,” Pacific Northwest Region Director Brian Goldberg of Seattle said. “They are bringing up international issues and going after people who feel the brunt of the economic downturn in the region.
“When you have times of economic despair, people look for scapegoats,” Goldberg said.
A four-page newsletter attacking various racial and ethnic groups was found in newspaper tubes and mailboxes of more than 10 homes near John Wayne Marina on Tuesday.
According to information in the newsletter, it came from the “National Socialist Movement, Central Clallam Unit.”
