Sequim: More elk tagged with radio collars

Five more elk in the Sequim-Dungeness herd have been equipped with radio collars that activate flashing warning signs along a 3-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 101 east of Sequim.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife reported that there has been only one accident involving elk along the stretch in the past four years.

That compares with more than a dozen such accidents before the radio system’s installation in 2000.

The recent placement of five collars brings the total number of collared animals to nine. It also helps offset the loss of three collared elk killed by hunters last fall, according to the wildlife department.
