SEQUIM — Mayor Walt Schubert accused Clallam County commissioners Wednesday with playing politics with the $350,000 Opportunity Fund grant application the city filed to fund construction of a reuse water transition line.
Schubert made his statements during a council study session as commissioners discussed supplying reuse water to a proposed private golf course north of the city.
Commissioner Steve Tharinger, D-Dungeness, in a subsequent telephone interview, said commissioners have to determine if it’s appropriate to grant the money to Sequim without requiring partial repayment.
That’s because the city will be able to collect fees for reuse water pumped to the golf course, Tharinger said.
The Opportunity Fund, according to Tharinger, comes from an 0.8 percent sales tax authorized by the Legislature to provide infrastructure for economic development in smaller counties.
Locally, applications are given to the Economic Development Council, which recommends projects to commissioners for final approval.
