Sequim: “Difficult decisions” may lie ahead on Hood Canal Bridge project

SEQUIM — The state Department of Transportation is ready to make “difficult decisions” on the future of the Hood Canal Bridge improvement project, the project manager told a business group Tuesday.

Ron Lewis, manager of the $285 million project to replace the east half of the floating bridge, upgrade the west half and build a graving yard for bridge components in Port Angeles, provided Sequim-Dungeness Chamber of Commerce members an overview of the project.

Delays at the graving yard in Port Angeles following the discovery of an ancient Klallam village has Transportation officials concerned about the 2007 east half replacement date and the future of the graving yard in Port Angeles.

“We are waiting on a ruling from Federal Highway (Administration),” Lewis said.

“We could have some difficult decisions in the next three weeks that will have to made.”
