SEQUIM — The city has flushed plans to build a $21 million sewer system that might have served most of Clallam County’s East End.
Rather than build a regional plant with lines to Carlsborg, Blyn and John Wayne Marina, Sequim will construct a system to serve only itself.
Sequim Mayor Walt Schubert said Wednesday the city had needed Clallam County commissioners’ unconditional support.
When that wasn’t forthcoming, federal funds — which Sequim officials said had been promised by U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Belfair — evaporated.
However, Clallam County Administrator Dan Engelbertson said that federal officials likely had denied Sequim’s proposal.
“Politically blaming it on the county is easy,” he said.
“The fact is, we did give them their support. We did not give them unconditional support.”
