Sequim: City, Japanese “sister” extend relationship agreement

SEQUIM — With raindrops pouring uncharacteristically from the sky, officials from Sequim and Yamasaki, Japan, celebrated the renewal of their 10-year agreement to maintain a sister city relationship.

The event at Carrie Blake Park on Sunday required a tarp for sheltering two dozen in attendance — some toting their own umbrellas to avoid the cold rain — as Mayors Walt Schubert of Sequim and Toshinori Takashima of Yamasaki penned their signatures to an agreement extending a relationship begun in 1993.

“Ten years ago, thanks to the vision of a few good citizens of Yamasaki and Sequim, this sister city relationship was born,” Schubert said in a speech to guests at a traditional turkey dinner held Sunday night at Pioneer Park in honor of the Yamasaki visitors.

“Today, with the support of the Sequim City Council, I had the honor of signing the new agreement.”
