Sequim: Charter review hearing speakers shoot down article to promote law enforcement

SEQUIM — A proposal adding an article to the Clallam County charter making law enforcement the paramount duty of county government was thrashed over by 10 of 13 speakers Thursday night.

The hearing was the first of three planned to give the public a chance to comment on proposed changes to the document that defines how county government operates.

The next public hearing is June 20 at the Clallam County Courthouse in Port Angeles with the final session planned for Forks City Hall on June 27. Both meetings begin at 6:30 p.m.

Proposals for changes to the charter will be put on the November general election ballot. A proposal needs a simple majority to be enacted.

The proposed article which drew fire Thursday night reads: “It is the paramount duty of Clallam County government to provide ample law enforcement and criminal justice to its citizens.”

Charter review chairman Dave Cummins of Sequim was shocked by the public’s reaction.
