SEKIU — A diesel fuel spill near Sekiu reported earlier this week has been cleaned up — and was less than originally reported, according to the state Department of Ecology.
About 40 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled Tuesday morning when construction crew members attempted to siphon fuel from a truck at Olson’s Resort but lost control of the transfer hose, Ecology spokeswoman Linda Kent said Wednesday.
Originally, it was thought that the amount was about 100 gallons of diesel.
Some of the fuel went into a storm drain and reached the water in Clallam Bay, Kent said.
None of that was recoverable, she said.
It apparently dispersed quickly.
“Warm, windy weather helped minimize environmental impacts,” Kent said.
The construction vehicle was not operated or owned by Olson’s Resort, she said, adding that the identity of the responsible party and consideration of possible fines are under investigation.
Personnel with Ecology, Coast Guard and Clallam County Fire District No. 5 assisted in the cleanup.
