Second-degree rape charged after Port Angeles police investigation

PORT ANGELES — A 28-year-old man has been charged with second-degree rape and other crimes after a Port Angeles police investigation.

David Lyle Schroeder, 28, was charged Thursday in Clallam County Superior Court with second-degree rape, unlawful imprisonment domestic violence, possessing a stolen vehicle and fourth-degree assault-domestic violence for an alleged attack that occurred last Monday in West Port Angeles.

An 18-year-old woman told police that Schroeder punched and raped her in a field near 2138 W. 18th St., according to the arrest report.

The woman said she was assaulted in a stolen Mitsubishi Galant that Schroeder was driving and was attacked as she tried to get away, court papers said.

A witness told investigators that Schroeder had dragged a screaming woman into a vehicle and hit her repeatedly in the car, Officer Erik Smith wrote in a supplemental probable-cause statement.

The woman had multiple bruises and scratches on her face, police said. Schroeder had scratches and a split lip, they added.

Schroeder denied that he hit or raped the woman in a police interview and a Thursday court hearing.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Christopher Melly set Schroeder’s bail at $50,000 and signed a sexual assault protection order for the alleged victim.

Schroeder will be arraigned next Thursday in Superior Court.
