Seattle-area man still in critical condition after fireworks injury in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — A 20-year-old man from the Seattle area remained in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center on Sunday, receiving treatment for injuries sustained when he was hit in the eye by fireworks during a Fourth of July celebration east of Port Angeles.

Justin Holland remained in Harborview’s intensive care unit in Seattle, a Harborview nursing supervisor said Sunday afternoon.

Holland was injured at 12:04 a.m. Saturday while shooting off fireworks on Gales Street, according to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

The mortar-type firework struck him in the left eye at close range.

He was taken to Olympic Medical Center by ambulance and was later airlifted to Harborview.

The injury was one of two fireworks-related injuries that Clallam County paramedics responded to during the holiday weekend.

In a separate incident, an unidentified 47-year-old man lost teeth Friday when a fireworks mortar hit him in the face on Hunt Road west of Port Angeles.

No information on the condition of the Hunt Road victim, who was taken by ambulance to OMC, was available Sunday.
