BRINNON — A search-and-rescue effort in the area of the Duckabush River was called off after a Mason County hiker reported to have failed to return home after a day hike Saturday showed up at his pickup truck
Sunday morning.
Marvin R. Simpson, 65, a Mason County resident and experienced hiker, was reported to be uninjured and unaware that anyone thought he was missing.
Simpson was reported missing by a family member, and Mason County Sheriff’s Office released a “be on the lookout” notice Sunday morning for people in the area who may have seen him.
“It turned out that his significant other had forgotten that he said that he would be staying overnight,” said Mason County Sheriff’s Office Detective William Adam.
A team was being assembled, and a deputy left a note on Simpson’s truck Sunday, Adam said.
Adam said that at about the same time, the family member called back, having remembered that Simpson may have said he was spending the night.
By the time the team returned to the truck, Simpson was there and had called his family members and others to let them know he was safe, he said.
