Schools, local libraries gearing up for another round of Battle of the Books

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) and schools from around Clallam County will be collaborating on the “Battle of the Books.”

NOLS staff will hold book discussions at fourth-grade classrooms from October through February.

The library also will facilitate a discussion group for home-schooled children from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Home-schooled students can register by calling 360-683-1161, ext. 7766, sending an email to Youth@nols.org or attending an orientation meeting at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.

All participating students will receive free copies of the five books they will read and discuss, they also will receive a T-shirt featuring original student artwork.

Schools will hold book-related trivia competitions in March to determine the teams that will represent each school.

Home-schooled readers will compete for a spot in the finals at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10 at the Sequim Library.

Teams representing each school take part in a final competition at 6:30 p.m. March 20 at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

The books in the program are: for October “The Sasquatch Escape” by Suzanne Selfors; for November “Me, Frida, and the Secret of the Peacock Ring” by Angela Cervantes; for December “Dragons in a Bag” by Zetta Elliott; for January “Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus” by Dusti Bowling; and for February “Lifeboat 12” by Susan Hood.
