PORT TOWNSEND — If the wind is manageable, the historic schooner Adventuress will take passengers on a leisurely tour of sights around Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday.
If winds are too high, passengers will tour Port Townsend Bay.
Either way, naturalists from the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, who are familiar with area bird and marine life, will provide commentary on the sights.
The special sail on the 101-year-old historic vessel, which is based in Port Townsend and operated by the nonprofit Sound Experience, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Cruises will leave from the dock at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., Port Townsend.
Cruises are $80 per person or $75 for members of the marine science center, Burke Museum, Audubon Society or Washington Ornithological Society.
All proceeds will benefit the marine science center’s educational programs.
Adventuress passengers can help the crew sail.
Protection Island, at the mouth of Discovery Bay, is a sanctuary for eagles, puffins, elephant seals and other wildlife.
“Experiencing a sail on the Adventuress is a lifetime memory,” said Janine Boire, executive director of the center.
“Add to that the opportunity to view the wildlife that inhabits the island and you’ve got a perfect day for the whole family.”
Reservations are required and may be made at 360-385-5582, online at www.ptmsc.org/cruises.html or by email at cruises@ptmsc.org.
