PORT HADLOCK — The Navy’s annual Deer Run at Naval Magazine Indian Island is set for July 16.
“This event allows you to run or walk through some beautiful forested areas on Indian Island,” said Cmdr. Nick Vande Griend, commanding officer.
“Thanks to the Navy’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation sports and fitness program team, we are happy to host this great fitness event on the 75th year of operation at Indian Island.”
Beginning at 10 a.m. July 16, participants of all ages will run or walk on a 5-kilometer (3.10 miles) non-paved terrain course through a forested area on the southern end of Indian Island.
A 1.2 mile road run — tailored for young children, participants with special needs or those with strollers or pets — also will be available.
The cost to register for adults is $25 with a T-shirt order and $10 without a T-shirt ordered. For ages 17 and younger the cost is $15 with a T-shirt order and free with no T-shirt ordered.
Civilian pre-registration
Civilians can pre-register for the Deer Run by sending an email to nbkfitness@navylifepnw.com.
The email should include name, preferred race course, age/division/gender and T-shirt size if the participant is pre-ordering a T-shirt.
To guarantee a Deer Run T-shirt size, pre-register by Friday.
Pre-registration ends July 14.
In a confirmation email, those who pre-register will be given specific information and instructions on where to pick-up run bibs and how to pay on the day of the race.
Those who will pay using a debit card will receive a coordinated phone call from the Navy’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) department to make the payment.
Participants can pay by credit card or cash the day of the race. Portable cash registers will be on-site.
MWR has ordered extra T-shirts for purchase the day of the race in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Naval Magazine Indian Island.
Race organizers historically have seen about 50 percent of registrations on the day of the race, they said.
Day of race
Registration the day of the race will be from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.
To ensure timely on-base access at Indian Island, participants are encouraged to arrive no later than 9 a.m. the day of the race.
Registered participants will be allowed to enter the main gate starting at 8 a.m.
Valid picture identification is required for entry and photography is not permitted on the base.
Awards ceremony
An awards ceremony is scheduled for 11:15 a.m.
Those finishing in the top three in each age division earn awards.
Divisions for the full course are 17 and younger, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and older.
One-mile divisions are 7 and younger, 8-12, 13-17, and 18 and older.
Last year, more than 100 people participated in Deer Run.
“The Deer Run is our opportunity to provide the civilian and military community a venue to keep active and enjoy Indian Island’s great outdoors,” Vande Griend said.
