PORT TOWNSEND — The city of Port Townsend will plant three paper birch shade trees at 9 a.m. today to celebrate Arbor Day.
The ceremony will take place at the Mountain View Dog Park, 1925 Blaine St.
An Arbor Day proclamation was read Monday night during the City Council meeting.
Arbor Day started in the late 1800s and is a day to plant trees and honor the commitment of those who share a vision of a healthier, greener world, according to a city news release.
Port Townsend is a member of Tree City USA and meets four standards of sound urban forestry management, maintaining a tree advisory board, having a community tree ordinance and spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day, the release stated.
