PORT TOWNSEND — The Navy plans to install a portable monitoring station on Port of Port Townsend property as part of a homeland defense project.
The project is being undertaken by the Navy Field Engineering Division in Everett. Personnel with the division could not be reached for comment Friday.
Port General Manager Larry Crockett said he believes the project involves a manned communication station.
“It’s some sort of communication equipment,” he said. “It’s going to be manned 24 hours a day.”
On Friday, Port commissioners authorized signing a six-month lease with the Navy that would then be renewable on a month-to-month basis until December 2002.
