PORT TOWNSEND — In a stand against standardized testing, two mothers took to the street Tuesday outside Mountain View Elementary School in protest of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning test, or WASL.
One of the women, Juanita Doyon of Spanaway, leads a statewide group against the quiz called Mothers Against WASL, commonly pronounced “wah-sell.”
She was in the city Tuesday to speak to parents about the test at the Port Townsend Community Center.
About a dozen people turned out for that talk.
The other mother, Alison Hedlund of Port Townsend, is organizing a local grassroots campaign against the long and short answer test.
“It’s a big mistake,” Hedlund said. “We should be giving the money to schools, not test makers.”
