CHENEY — Port Townsend junior Kestle Riley won the 2A state title in the 300-meter hurdles at Woodward Stadium this weekend.
Riley, who placed third in the event last year, broke the tape in a Peninsula-best 46.47 seconds.
Riley also finished sixth in the 100 hurdles in 16.98. Her brother Kolby was second in the 400 and fifth in the 100 and 200 races on the boys’ side of the meet.
The Redskins’ 4×400 relay team of Riley, Danielle Flickinger, Lorna Porter and Cassie Weyhmiller finished sixth, shattering their own Peninsula-best time in 4:14.36. The previous mark was 4:21.3.
Chimacum’s Robin Phinzy placed 16th in the pole vault at 7-0 and Forks’ Amy Poppe ran a 2:36.0 in a preliminary 800 race but missed the final round.
Crescent freshmen place
CHENEY — Crescent sent three freshmen to the B state meet, led by Jessie Smith, who placed eighth in the long jump at 14-11–.
The Loggers’ Ruth Wilhelm, also a freshman, finished 10th in the shot put (31-8) and 15th in the discus (74-4), while freshman teammate Ashley Thompson finished 16th in the high jump (4-2).
Crescent senior Annie Johnston finished 13th in the triple jump at 30-8, and junior Kelley Dearinger was 12th in the high jump at 4-8.
Also at the B meet, Clallam Bay senior Ashley Barber finished 15th in the 3,200 in 14:06.15.
Riders’ Diimmel takes 10th
TACOMA — Holly Diimmel of Port Angeles placed 10th in the javelin during the 4A meet, recording a distance of 115-11.
Port Angeles’ 4×100 relay team of Marlene Blackburn, Jenny Smith, Steph Calkins and Hayley Dean ran the second-fastest time in school history and a Peninsula-best time of 50.9.
The team finished seventh in its preliminary heat, but did not make the finals.
The Riders’ Christina Hebert finished 16th in the shot put with an effort of 34-9–, and Marie Cook placed 16th in the triple jump at 32-10.
During the 3A meet in Tacoma, Sequim’s Heather Gillissen finished 13th in the triple jump at 31-½ and the Wolves’ Kjerstein Bailey ran her second-fastest time of the season to place 15th in the 3,200 in 12:05.5.
