Port Townsend High students to offer taste of culture, food tonight

PORT TOWNSEND — High school students will present tastes of a variety of food in a mock food-truck format tonight.

Culture Night, set from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Port Townsend High School cafeteria, 1500 Van Ness St., is intended to provide insight about diverse culinary practices. Admission is free.

Students are from the world language, tourism and culinary arts classes.

“The kids are learning what it takes to run a small business and all the steps they have to take,” said culinary arts teacher Jennifer Kruse.

Added business teacher Tanya Rublaitus: “They’ve learned teamwork skills, how to work with people they don’t already know.”

Food samples will be served to those who attend from 10 propped-up pieces of plywood painted to look like food trucks.

Rublaitus said each team painted a truck design, chose a business name, developed and sampled three recipes, established a blog and filmed a commercial.

Some of the foods available are fajitas, crepes and soul food.
