Port Townsend: High school students pitching in for Main Street

PORT TOWNSEND — A group of high school students is teaming up with Main Street to leave a positive mark on the town.

The “junior”‘ Main Street program is the brainchild of Port Townsend High School student Brooke Saul.

She wanted a way for students to get involved with supporting the local shopping districts and to help promote local events.

Saul, 18, has been a Main Street volunteer for four years. Her mother, restauranteur Joann Saul, is a past board president for the organization.

Nearly one dozen other students have signed up to be a part of the program.

Their inaugural event will be picking up garbage throughout town April 17.

Other activities planned include graffiti removal and event promotion.

The students plan to meet once a month at the high school to plan their activities.

The next student meeting will be held April 16 at 2:30 p.m. in Erik Nelson’s room at the high school.

Steve Wilmart, Main Street board liaison for the group, said the program could be a boon for both downtown and uptown.

Involving teenagers in Main Street has been a goal for a number of years, Brooke Saul said.

It was finally started this year as her senior class project.
