Port Townsend: Chamber weighs state ferry options to Whidbey Island

PORT TOWNSEND — The Chamber of Commerce envisions people leaving their cars on Whidbey Island when they come via ferry to shop in Jefferson County.

That is one of the goals the business group outlines in a letter being sent to Washington State Ferries.

The state Department of Transportation’s ferry service is retiring the 76-year-old boats now plying the Port Townsend-Keystone route.

As part of that transition, terminal improvements are slated for both ends of the run.

Board members of the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce expressed their desire to see a parking lot built at Keystone so people can walk onto the ferry as passengers to Port Townsend.

On the Quimper end of the route, the chamber wants ferry parking to be as close to downtown Port Townsend as possible.

That way people waiting to board the next vessel can shop and dine, chamber Executive Director Tim Caldwell said Monday.
