PORT ANGELES — Port of Port Angeles commissioners unanimously approved a 25-page work plan that will track the progress of the organization over the course of the year.
The plan includes a host of activities ranging from preparing for the docking of two cruise ships in early May to obtaining a new phone system for the port.
The plan was developed by port staff over the past several months.
Some of the highlights include:
• Preparing for the docking of two cruise ships in early May
• Establishing a new global position approach at William R. Fairchild International Airport.
• Developing opportunities for alternative energy.
• Finishing major maintenance projects such as rebuilding the Terminal 3 dock ladders, repairing Port Angeles Boat Haven work pier pilings and seal-coating the Port Angeles Boat Yard.
• Obtaining a new phone system.
The plan also includes more marketing of nearly every area of the port.
The staff will also give quarterly reports to the commissioners on the progress in the plan.
Jobs created or retained, official costs, grants and other information will be updated as the plan is worked through.
“I hope that you won’t shy away from discussing job creation and retention when you do the quarterly reports,” Commissioner John Calhoun said at Monday’s meeting.
“That is a metric that people in the public understand and that I understand.
“I hope that it will be included in the reports.”
He also said that because the work plan encompasses a good deal of what the port does and touches every area — including marinas, airports and other property — he would like to hear more about how it develops.
“I would be willing to dedicate the better part of a meeting to the quarterly reports, because it is that important,” he said.
