Port Ludlow woman — ‘real, great, lovely lady’ — killed when tree falls on car

PORT LUDLOW — A 74-year-old Port Ludlow woman was killed during Monday evening’s windstorm when an 80-foot tree came crashing down on her car.

Suzanne J. Charawell was traveling alone, driving south on Oak Bay Road from Port Hadlock to Port Ludlow shortly after 5 p.m. when the tree, with a diameter of between 18 inches and 24 inches, fell across the road, crushing the front passenger section of her 1981 Ford LTD.

“It was one of those proverbial acts of God,” said Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Brasfield, a Port Ludlow resident who frequently drives on Oak Bay Road.

“I had been driving by there no less than five minutes earlier.

“There was nothing that the driver could have done to avoid it.”
