PORT ANGELES — A proposal to require Port Angeles Swim Club members to buy annual passes has been bounced back to the city’s parks and recreation subcommittee for review, Mayor Richard Headrick says.
The proposal was one that emerged during negotiations between the Parks and Recreation Department and the swim club over how much the club was charged for using William Shore Memorial Pool, he said.
Swim club organizers complained to the City Council at its Tuesday meeting that the group could not afford the annual passes, which cost $100 per swimmer for city residents and $150 for non-city residents.
Since Deputy Parks Director Marc Connelly was unavailable Tuesday night to provide more information and members of the City Council apparently were unaware of the proposal, the issue was referred back to the subcommittee, Headrick said.
The Port Angeles Swim Club has more than 60 members ranging in age from 5 to 22 years old.
Club vice president Jim Hoine told the council Tuesday night that other club sports, such as Babe Ruth baseball, aren’t charged a user fee at the city’s athletic fields.
