Port Angeles students trick-or-treat $1,000 for UNICEF

PORT ANGELES — The River Otters of the Ridge Program at Roosevelt Elementary School collected more than $1,000 for UNICEF.

During their Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, now also known as the United Nations Children’s Fund, they led Roosevelt Elementary School classes by collecting $1192.38.

After hearing the news of the spread of the Ebola virus in Africa, Ridge River Otters hoped to bring in between $200 and $300 to help children throughout the world get vaccinations for a variety of diseases, have access to clean and safe drinking water, get mosquito nets to prevent malaria and receive education on Ebola prevention and nutritious food.

“They were so surprised and proud to be able to help in such a big way and so proud of their Roosevelt community,” said teacher Terri Longin.

“These third- and fourth-graders learned a great deal through the process,” Longin said.

“Their greatest lesson was that a small group of people can accomplish a great thing if they spread the word passionately and involve others.”

The Ridge River Otters program is a Port Angeles School District-wide program for highly capable students that began at the elementary level this fall.
