Port Angeles: Students to take to Lake Sutherland in cardboard boats

PORT ANGELES — Students from Roosevelt and Stevens middle schools will take to the water today in a cardboard boat showing at Lake Sutherland.

About 30 students will see how boats they constructed fare on the water.

Cardboard boating activities will take place from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m.

“I came up with the idea after taking a look at a Southern Illinois College’s Web site. They had built these boats and I felt that I could apply it to middle school-age children,” Paul Reed, a Stevens Middle School technology engineering teacher said. “Kids at this level need to problem-solve and see how something they built works.”

Building materials were restricted to cardboard, silicone to seal cracks and water sealant to strengthen the cardboard. Marine paint was also used for decoration and design, he said.
