Port Angeles Senior Center expansion expected to begin within two weeks

PORT ANGELES – The City Council has awarded a contract for an expansion of the Port Angeles Senior Center.

Aldergrove Construction of Port Angeles, with a low bid of $375,665 – an amount below the city engineer’s estimate for the project – was awarded the contract.

The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to be within two weeks.

“It’s an amazing and busy and nonstop place and it’s just going to get bigger,” said Mayor Karen Rogers.

The project will expand the center’s first floor lounge and second floor computer classroom area in the building’s southeast corner, as well as converting a men’s restroom to a family restroom.

It will add 1,792 square feet to the 17,500-square-foot building at 328 E. Seventh St., with about an equal amount on the first and second floors.

City Public Works Director Glenn Cutler said the city received two bids.

The bid from Aldergrove Construction of Port Angeles included $361,789 for the base bid and $13,875 for the option to convert a men’s restroom to a family restroom, he said.

The other bidder was Drury Construction Co. Inc. of Poulsbo at $514,900, including $498,640 for the base bid and $16,260 for the restroom option.

The city engineer’s estimate was $387,000, including $374,500 for the base bid and $12,500 for the option.

Cutler said sufficient funds are available – including $60,000 in the city’s capital facility program budget and $336,0000 left over from the 1991 bond issue – to do both the base bid and the bathroom remodeling option.
