Port Angeles Salvation Army commander transferred to Montana; farewell party today

PORT ANGELES — After 10 months on the job in Port Angeles, Maj. Darvin Jordan will transfer to the Salvation Army in Helena, Mont.

Jordan said he was surprised to be transferred from Port Angeles so quickly and that he was sad to hear the news.

“Next Sunday [June 27], right after I get done preaching in the morning service, we’ll get in our U-Haul and go,” he said Saturday.

“Once you get the orders, your job is to salute and show up where you’re supposed to go,” he added.

“My family and I are being good soldiers even though we didn’t want to go.”

A farewell party for the Jordans is planned at 6:30 p.m. today at Bethany Pentecostal Church, 508 S. Frances St., in Port Angeles.

The party will start with a worship service. A reception is scheduled at 7:45 p.m.

Jordan said he will show his appreciation for the town.

“I’m going to do a little concert for them,” Jordan said.

Jordan said that the couple he is replacing — Capts. Dana and Cathleen Johnson — will also be replacing him.

“It is kind of ironic,” he said.

“They are even going to use the same moving truck.”

The Johnsons’ first day on the job in Port Angeles will be June 30, Jordan said.

Before entering the Salvation Army, Jordan spent most of his career as a film and television music writer and spent more than a decade on the road as a musician.

Even though he regrets leaving Port Angeles, he is ready for things ahead.

“I hope we get to stay in Helena for a little bit longer than this,” Jordan said.

Jordan replaced Maj. Hal Hads in August 2009.

Jordan had begun work to raise money for a new 17-by-50-foot addition to the Salvation Army building, which is at 206 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

The addition would be a location for refrigerators and food storage to open up the gymnasium where it is now stored.

He then planned to hold children’s programs and other events in the gym.
