Port Angeles: Port signs letter of intent for conference center land swap

PORT ANGELES — A complex land deal necessary for the proposed Oak Street hotel/conference center has received approval.

“It sounds like we are moving forward,” said Port of Port Angeles Commissioner Glenn Beckman, after the deal was approved unanimously Monday.

This is a good, long-term viable use of the Oak Street property, said Commissioner Leonard Beil.

The deal consists of a land swap between the Port and the state Department of Natural Resources.

The swap shifts boundaries so the Port will own the land at the northern side of the property, near the harbor, that would be used for the waterfront hotel and conference center proposed by developer Randal Jay Ehm.

The Port’s land would be sold to Ehm for about $1 million; Ehm must own the property in order to get financing for the development.

The rest of the land will be owned by state Natural Resources and will be leased to Ehm for parking.
