Port Angeles: Permit approved for Rayonier dock maintenance

PORT ANGELES — Rayonier Inc. can proceed with its dock rehabilitation project after the city Planning Commission Wednesday night unanimously approved a shoreline development permit.

Rayonier wants to replace 800 support pilings and 300 protective pilings on the 1,100-foot dock at its former Ennis Drive pulp mill site.

Environmentalists opposed the project, saying it would stir up contaminated sediment around the pilings.

Conditions attached to the permit included compliance with the city’s shoreline master program; approval by the state Department of Ecology of the storage and disposal of pilings and sediment; a tribal cultural inventory; and replacement of only the minimum number of pilings.

The pier project is separate from the mill demolition, environmental assessments or remediation, city officials said.
