PORT ANGELES — An oil tanker company has been fined $25,000 for spilling more than 400 gallons of crude oil in Port Angeles Harbor last year.
Alaska Tanker Co. was ordered to pay the fine following the Jan. 29, 2001, spill from the tanker Prince William Sound, the state Department of Ecology announced Tuesday.
An estimated 462 gallons of Alaska North Slope crude oil partially stained two miles of beach inside Ediz Hook and prompted the rescue and treatment of 11 oiled birds.
An Ecology investigation found the tanker did not have a check valve in place to prevent a deck-drain system from overflowing, Ecology spokeswoman Sandy Howard said.
