Port Angeles officer test-drives a Segway around downtown

PORT ANGELES — The first day of the city’s two-week tryout of a Segway Personal Transporter “went really well,” said Port Angeles Police Officer Duane Benedict.

“If I was on a bicycle, I’d be out in the street instead of on the sidewalk,” where he rides the two-wheeled scooter.

“This is more personable,” he said.

“I ride it, and people come up to talk to me.”

The scooters, which are ridden standing up, can travel at speeds of up to 12.5 mph, go as far as 24 miles on one battery charge and use no gasoline.

One arrived Monday from Segway on a two-week loan to see if there’s enough community support to raise $5,500 in donations to buy it.

It will be introduced at the Port Angeles Downtown Association’s general meeting tonight at The Landing mall to kick off the fundraising campaign.
