PORT ANGELES — Gary Carl Borneman’s murder and kidnapping trial has been reset for March 2.
The 40-year-old is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and five other charges after the Oct. 7 shooting death of Gerald “Jerry” Howell and kidnapping of Howell’s girlfriend, Rebecca Messinger, in Port Angeles.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge George L. Wood granted defense attorney John Hayden’s request for a new trial date in a Tuesday hearing.
County Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney John Troberg did not object.
Both had previously agreed to continue the two-week trial to allow more time for forensic testing, Troberg has said.
The case was originally scheduled to go before a jury this week.
Port Angeles police allege that Borneman kidnapped Messinger and shot Howell with a .22-caliber pistol at Messinger’s residence at 130 W. 11th St.
Charges
Borneman is charged with single counts of first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful imprisonment, violation of a domestic violence protection order and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
He is also charged with cyberstalking Messinger in another pending case.
A status hearing for both cases is set for Jan. 2.
Borneman is being held in the Clallam County jail on $2 million bond.
