Port Angeles: Most laid off K Ply workers back on the job

PORT ANGELES — K Ply Inc. officials said Tuesday that all but five of the mill’s workers laid off in November have returned to work.

K Ply laid off 25 employees from various parts of the mill, based on seniority, because of a slowing demand for products the mill produces.

K Ply produces plywood and treated paper overlays.

Last month, K Ply President Ernie Van Ogle said the company would assess the plywood market this month and review layoffs.

“The good news is that it looks like market conditions are improving,” Van Ogle said Tuesday afternoon. “We are hoping to have the other five employees back to work by February.”

The workers that remain laid off have worked at the mill an average of less than a year, he said.

The mill currently employs about 165 people and operates three shifts. Van Ogle said production at the mill is back to normal.
